The link below is to a type of coon trap that works better than any other trap I've ever seen or heard of. Several manufacturers make a trap very similar to the one linked to here.

I have no relationship with the company selling them or the company that makes them. In fact, I also use several other types of traps to remove predators from the areas we keep our animals. Just about every trapping supply company out there sells these foot traps.

I bait the traps with strawberry preserves mixed with chopped-up minnows I catch. Canned tuna, fish heads and guts, or sardines would work just as well I'm sure. I mix the two together and stuff it down into the trap. I drop a couple of dollops of bait on the ground around my traps to get 'em enjoying the treat.

In order to set the trap off, the trigger must be pulled upward. Coons and possums have the dexterity to reach in and "pull up" on the trigger. Dogs paws are generally too large and cats do not have the ability to pull up on the trigger. There is a conversion kit that will enable the trap to trip when pushed down or pulled up.

I have set this trap in 3 areas my family has chickens, ducks and rabbits. All of the sites have dogs and several cats on the premises. My traps were never set-off accidentally by any other animal besides coons and possums. We have caught over two dozen coons and possums with these traps. My fish-n-jelly bait works beautifully. The last set I made with them, I caught two possums within 30 minutes of setting them out. My partner had kept insisting it was coons that had pulled our hen's heads through the wire and ate the heads off. Two captured possums and 30 minutes later...

I will have to see if my feed store carries these. I like them better than my coni snap traps. To bad they don't make somethig for cottontails!

Ah, you're talking about Duke dog-proofs! These are excellently designed and built and will last for decades. They target ONLY coon and the occasional skunk. I keep a pair of these set nightly in the woods just behind the coop. I get my trapping supplies from F&T where these run $13 each for the last ones I bought if I remember correctly.

We don't have skunks here. I guess it's too wet or something. It is good that these work on skunks also. With the trap anchored well, you could approach the skunk with no danger of being sprayed.

We have discouraged the coons and possums from the areas around our animals for the most part, mostly with the help of these traps. It surprises me how few cases of possum predation I read about from these BYC folks posts.

Possums are responsible for killing more of our chickens than any other predator. We hunt wild Russian boars just a few hundred yards from our chickens. We get many coons that come to eat the corn we put out for the hogs. And, we have no shortage of coyotes either! I think the possums just forget the encounters quicker and, the coons are just smarter.

Interesting. I've never seen a possum up here, so I have no idea if they'd be caught by a DP or not, so when I said they only catch coon and skunk I do have to say in all candor that they've only caught coon and skunk FOR ME.
