The best hatcheries

I have been doing research on Hatcheries, looking up all the websites, breeds offered, and prices and writing them down. Small-time hatcheries can be just as good or better then the major ones, but I have found the best chicks are likely to come from websites that work hard on providing good information, high-quality pictures, and have a high-quality website.

These include:

California
Green Fire Farm
Porter's Rare Breed Turkeys
Ideal
Purely Poultry
Sand Hill Preservation (lacks photos but I read the book written by the owners)
Meyer
Strombergs
Welp


These all had eye-appealing website with obvious price markers, photographs to show what the breed will look like (often as both adults, chicks, and sometimes as a rooster and hen. Some even show egg coloration). They care about their customer service or they would not make such good websites, as I have seen plenty of hatcheries with poor pictures and difficult to use websites that were not appealing at all.
They offer a variety of breeds and species and ship so often they must have an okay system and make their money back.

I was wondering though, has anyone had bad experiences with these hatcheries?

I've had direct orders from Ideal and have never been disappointed. And I've had feed store chicks that came from Cackle this year and have also been pleased. I have heard that Privett Hatchery (which is my state of NM) is wonderful too. Their site has an extensive list of birds and rarer varieties but they don't have pics yet. I do plan on giving them a shot next season.

Ideal is great in that the only minimum they require is a dollar amount of $25. Not 25 chicks. Of course this mandates "packing peanuts" (extra cockerels for warmth) for small orders shipped during colder months.

You're welcome, and I agree with you that Cackle's pics are not as high a quality as some of the other hatcheries on your list. But one thing that Cackle does have that none of the other hatcheries has is videos of their breeding flocks (

I have not acquired birds from them, but they do look high quality and have an incredible selection and very nice photos. They information on the history, coloration, conservation status, weight, production and temperament of the breeds and hybrids, which is very useful. Prices are not low (Isa Browns cost nearly $3.03-3.75 each, but not as high as some others either. They have a minimum order of 5 per color/breed (from what I see).

While they don't have pictures of their birds, I did read a book written by them and their description seems to prove they have happy, healthy birds. They have a huge variety of rare breeds and keep information on their history and genetics. It is wonderful what they are doing! However, they are not as easy to order from as some other, commercial hatcheries.
