I had 33 chicks that were supposed to arrive today. Never got the call. Went to the Post Office to see if they just had the wrong number. No chicks. Got a hold of the hatchery. Apparently they delayed the shipping 2 days because they had run out of one of the breeds. The scheduler failed to email me the change. They were apologetic but I won't be here when they come on Friday as I have to fly out of town to a wedding. I hope my wife is up to starting them off! Nothing is ever easy with chicks...

That has happened to me before. Get the brooder all set up before you leave, get everything running, then just tell your wife to pick them up from the PO and put them in the brooder. I am almost never home when my shipped animals get here so I try to make the job of my family members as easy as possible so they don't mess up.

It's not that simple. Someone needs to teach them how to drink. I have found that is the key to good survival rates. I rarely lose a chick once they hit the brooder. I have it all set up. She just has to add hot water to the fount and turn on the plug strip which powers up the lamps.
