Yaay for my first post! I hope it's okay to create a new thread. I saw a few other posts for specific coloured Orps, but didn't come across any for Blacks. During my research prior to bringing these beauties home, I found myself opening links to this website A LOT.. I figured I had better join - i'm sure i'll have a million questions!!
While i'm not new to farming/homesteading, I am new to Orpington ownership. I currently have 3 16 week Pullets who i'm really growing attached to. We just got them a week ago, but they're really warming up to me and becoming oh-so-friendly. They're such gorgeous birds. The teal-ish colour that comes off their wings in the sun is absolutely stunning (yet I can't get it to show up well on a camera to save my life, despite being a professional photographer) and I can't wait for them to start laying!
We may find 1-2 other hens already laying while we impaciently wait, but we will see.
The coop is a work in progress and was kind of thrown together as a 'temporary' set up. They have a 5 x 5 raised coop within a 10x10 run. The Run's the most 'temporary' part as it's temporarily just reused hog wire, with chicken wire over top (as they can currently fit right thru the holes), but will be exchanged for Stucco wire shortly, and will be expanded. We will also likely be building a second coop, as the Orp breeder also has Royal Palm Turkeys just hatching, and we would like to get a few Poults
What's a thread without pictures?! These were taken 3 days after they arrived. They were *just* starting to settle in. I'm hoping once they're more settled and enjoy our company a little more, they can free range during the afternoons on our acreage.
