Ok so I am just so excited. I have a young rooster who was badly injured by a predator. We were only able to save him because I heard the ruckus. Both of his eyes were damaged so he is completely blind. Now that he is healed I decided to try him in my silkie pen since my rooster is a very laid back 10 year old and it is the only pen with a roof over the run. I put his sister in with him to act as a seeing eye chicken. I worried about whether he would be content bumping around in the dark and felt he needed to be part of a flock. Well today I was going about my chores when I heard a rusty sounding crow that definitely wasn't my Silkie Roo. I quietly opened the door to see my beautiful blind rooster crowing. I believe he is content with his life. I have to say that he is one of the friendliest chickens I've ever had. He listens and the moment he hears you he meanders over to say hello. We do show him where the food and water is twice a day to make sure he is able to find it and the little flock is very friendly without any agreeive ones. Nearly Headless Nick (named after the Harry Potter books) is doing well. He does look a bit silly as he is nearly 3 times the size of his flock mates but he doesn't know that. :weee

Wow, that's so amazing! I'm so glad to hear that his doing so good!

Glad you were able to save him and that he is doing well!

Me too. He missed curfew and I miscounted when I did a bed check. Heard a ruckus and went out to check. Couldn't find anything so went back in. 10 min later heard it again and that is when I found him. I felt guilty missing him the first time so it gains him a permanent spot in the flock.

Don't blame yourself.

I have a hen who went blind and we have her in a special room with a non-aggressive hen to keep her company. She can smell the food and we keep everything in the same spot. Occasionally I bring her out to a sandy spot and she dust bathes. Glad to know yours is doing well too!
