It's about a stallion that was caught from the wild and trained to pull stagecoaches in Denver, Colorado. He was abused (basically like Black Beauty if you ever read it) and really wanted to go back to the wild. He escaped from the livery stable and a man, John Greene, took him in. The black horse liked his new home at John's farm.
The barn caught on fire and John started looking for temporary homes for the horses until the barn got rebuilt. His neighbor, Mark Wilkins (who was secretly a horse thief) said he would take the horse in. Mark sold him to some other people, who used the horse to work on their farm and sire foals. When they found out how spirited he was when he threw the barn owner, the horse was put into a paddock, never getting enough to eat and drink and no shelter. He escaped and was reunited with his owner until John Greene passed away. Then the horse returned to the wild, actually looking for another human. A young woman named Crystal Bennett and her father took him in, and the horse and his new owner were best friends. Crystal realized the horse was meant to be free, so she returned him to the wild, where the stallion remained. As Crystal's words were,
"You were born free. You can't die captive."
