A few days ago my husband came to inform me that our chickens had been grazing in their fenced (but not covered) "porch" area, and when he checked on them, one SLW (Bubbles) had disappeared without a trace. I came out to help look for her. The rest of the chickens were placed in the locked, covered run while we wandered all over our acerage, shaking bags of treats and calling for Bubbles. Nothing. Not a feather. Not a peep. No Bubbles. She's not much of a flier, so it was hard to imagine she flew out of the fenced porch, but it was obvious that no predator had gotten IN, so it really seemed like this girl had just been suddenly taken in the chicken rapture or something. Finally, I decided to let the rest of the flock out, knowing that they all like to be together, and hoping they would reunite, if Bubbles was hiding in a bush somewhere. Immediately, Blossom, my ultra sassy RIR, walked right up to a plastic storage container that was lying upside down in the "porch" area. She started pecking at it like, "Look right here, you idiots!" Bubbles had gotten trapped under the container. I lifted it up, and she came out, shook herself off, and tried to act casual. Did I mention that this plastic container was *transparent*?!
Thanks for saving the day, Blossom. But I am pretty sure you've permanently put my husband and me down in your records as first class idiots. (Blossom is the kind of chicken who keeps a record-book. Her writing is real chicken-scratch though.)
