The Chicken Mission - A Philanthropic Chicken Adventure

wow Ozexpat what a great idea love-it ^_^

"Chicken Mission"

may i know when is your schedule on that mission?

Now if I was to describe it versus you looking it up, would it have had more impact?

Yes it would. You could explain the crunchiness of those little bones. Maybe Zimmerman or Anthony Bourdain will eat one.

I think of this pretty much everyday. I have almost completed 1000 km (621 miles) of training, but have hit a few hurdles as how to convert an ultra marathon to $$$ for this trip.

After recent events, this trip seems even more important.

I shall press on with preparations :)

Thanks Ben

It is even more important. I think we will add another hundred birds if I can get them hatched. I lost a chunk of eggs that were the start of the program last week due to the power outages from Yolanda.

My second set of birds should start laying in the next 2 weeks. That should beef up the numbers.

I have had several PMs from people concerned regarding "chicks for Yolanda" comments flying around. Some are less than pleasant.

Please understand the following

1. This project was set up way before Typhoon Yolanda. Trying to give baby chicks to Yolanda victims is not logical. They have immediate concerns that need to be met.
2. The Chickens I give away will be point of lay - or as close to point of lay as I can get as the typhoon wiped out my first hatch for the project.
3. I am giving away trios of birds to people who attend a day of training on sustainable living with poultry. The class will include local feed alternatives.
4. I will supply 20 lbs of feed per trio to ensure that the point of lay birds reach laying rather than hit the dinner pot.
5. I will also assess the practicality of giving roosters to those with local hens to upgrade their chickens.

I am doing this on my own volition and with my own resources. I have invited anyone who wants the experience of participating and helping to do so.

I am not seeking financial support. The Philippines has been wonderful to me and this is my way of giving back.

If you want to give to Yolanda victims - donate through the Philippine Red Cross or UNICEF.

Don't listen to the haters Oz! Everyone who knows you and your plans has faith that this will help the community. We believe in the mission

Thanks OGM

I am not worried about haters as much as misinformation. I wat to give westerners the opportunity to have an incredible experience combining something they are passionate about with helping others.

The plans are progressing. I will attend a Lions Club meeting on Nov 21 in the Philippines to finalize the mission part of the trip.

The date looks like it will be departing LAX on the evening of March 21 and returning March 30.
