Hi we are jan and rich from kent uk. Ive only ever had a gildfish! Rich has had dogs etc. Anyway we have 3 pullets. I was very brave and cut the wings on one yesterday as she nearly flew over 6ft fence. We are going to build a high bigger run with a roof so i can let them out of coop without worrying. I was looking at what size wood to use when i found answers on here so thought id join. Just as well i did as we were going to use 2x1!rich hates diy! Look forward to reading and learning x

Hi Jan & Rich, it's nice to have you here!

Shes a rohode island red. Flew on top of coop then looking at fence. We have lots of foxes here. Was so scared for her. I ran out shaking mealworm bag and she got down! Ended up taking the plunge and clipping her wing.

Hi what are your thoughts? When building a bigger run which is about 5 ti 6ft high; 4x4 inch posts? Also the wire. I have seen some that are 6ft wide but if we use narrower one how do you get over the problem of where each piece meets. Not sure if im naking sense! Posts 2m apart. 6ft high. Wire across, say 3ft wide. 2widths to go across but between posts wouldnt they gape?

Thanks for the response, I didn't know they flew that high.. I have always been a little afraid of their personalities :) so have no RIR's.

Good for you on reacting promptly.

Why don't you post the question under the Coop and Run forum? There are so many folks around here with great expertise, but most don't watch the New Member forum.

I have an all in one coop/run - all covered with a real solid roofing. Foxes can climb and dig, so they are a real threat and hunt anytime of the day - not just at night. The only ones I have seen around here were at 10 am and 3 pm...

agree with Sunflour - fox are out any time they want, they have adapted to the city & suburbs and know when their best chances are for an easy lunch

Welcome!

As you have already received links to some good starting points and some great advice, I will just wish you all the best.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
