I also placed my order for chicks, but it's the first time I have had chickens, I have read everything I can find on the internet. We have been working on the coop, and getting ready for the chicks due 1st week of March. I plan on keeping them inside for the first few weeks till it's warm enough to put outside, I have my heat lamp, water, feeder, ordered special gel for the first day home, I just have a couple questions about the coop, how far off the ground should the roosts be, and I read to make boxes small enough the chickens can't stand up to poop or scratch, so we made them 12"x12" by 9" high. seems kind of small. I ordered Rhode Island reds, are they going to be big enough for these size birds?
Thanks
Terry

I have roosts about 6 inches off the floor of the house. The house part of the coop itself is about 4 feet off the ground. In my other coop we have the roosts up around 4 and a half feet.
I think the nest boxes will be fine. They're not for moving around anyways it should be perfect so long as they can get in there and lay an egg.
