Who knows how to take care of a 4 week old kitten? I don't.

Who just committed to taking one anyway? This girl.

I couldn't help it. My co-workers were just going to leave them all in a box and hope for the best! There are five of them, but I am only taking one. One one one. Don't let me get all softhearted and take more. Jamison wants to kill me as it is

They get here in less than an hour. Dear. God. I have some research to do....

Not too bad at 4 weeks. Is it weaned?

If it's weaned or just starting to wean then softened kitten food will be OK. At 4 weeks it should be eating on it's own, at least partially.

You may need to supplement with a bottle. Bottles and formula are available at pet/feed stores. Directions come with the formula. Not difficult, might drink it on it's own.

It really would be better if not separated from mom so early.

Good luck,

Imp

btw- I'm assuming you are aware of other aspects of kittens, like litter boxes, toys, teeth & claws. Shredding furniture. Have fun from a 5-7 cat household.

Want more?

You know they are really more fun if you have two

We now have three 8 week olds. They were supposed to go to homes while I was in CA, but someone (DH) fell in love. They are a riot. My house willnever be the same! Moved all the houseplants, moved books from bookcases( they like to play hide and seek in them.) Cookbooks all over the floor too many times. Packed the cookbooks. I now have one of them helping me type and purring in my ear. These were supposed to be barn cats!!!!
They were eating kitten chow at 4 weeks, but still suckling their mother when they got a chance. I have raised a few from 4 weeks with no problems. Do not give it cows milk. Water with a little ACV will keep it healthy. If it is not gaining wieght you can get a supplement at the pet store. I also feed mine scrambled eggs. They love them. A shallow litter box to start with with clumping litter. ( easier to clean), You may have to put the kitten in the box a few times for it to get the idea, but overall it seems natural to them to scratch. I usually place them in the box about 15 minutes after they have eaten. Enjoy. Hope this helps and I know where you can get a second one. We now have 6 felines around here. I would be willing to share.

At around 4 weeks, I always mixed kitten milk replacer in baby rice cereal. It gave them the mushy feeling of a solid, but they still got the full amount of milk in their diet. Each day, I cut back the milk, and added wet food to the mix, by 6 weeks, they were all eating wet food. From there, I started adding dry food to their wet food, and by 8 weeks they are all eating dry food.

Just wanted to add: Try it out with the bottle first. Normally, if they really are starting to bite the bottle, they are ready to be moved to more solid food (baby cereal mix).

Here he is! As you can see, he is missing part of his right ear. My co-worker accidentally ran him over with the lawn mower. Little Samson here is lucky that the tip of the ear is all he is missing. Poor little guy. I put some wound care ointment on it to help with the pain and prevent infection. I also gave him a warm bath with some gentle dish soap to nip a little flea problem in the bud. He's quite a cutie!!

OMG, a lawnmower!!!!!!!

Glad he's OK.
He is a cutie.

Gotta warn you, a few years ago I bottle raised my namesake and his 2 brothers. Imp was the smallest. Well he grew and grew and grew, now he's a big boy, about 24 lbs. I have changed his name to Blimp. The first comment anyone makes at my house is "That cat is soooo fat". Doesn't help that he has chronic bowel issues that gives him 'pasty butt' and gas that peels paint off the wall.

Imp- please help please

You really do need two kittens. They love to keep each other company. :)
