The Coop that may never be...

Love the coop! Most people that don't have chickens think rooster when you mention them, maybe this ole coot that is complaining thinks she'll be hearing a 4am crow. If you don't plan on having a roo then maybe you could (sadly paint the coop to match) then go around to the neighbors that can see your yard and tell them your gonna be getting some hens (lie and say no roosters b/c you can't stand hearing them) and ask if they would like some free eggs when you start getting them. They will see the coop doesn't stand out anymore, your not gonna have a loud bird and they get FREE eggs (so they think) This will give ya an idea about how your neighbors feel and hopefully stop pointless complaints. Im sure people would complain about bamboo but I live in the country and have some I just xplanted by my driveway, stuff grows 3-6" a day and will look awesome when its all branched out. You could get some big pots or with the "farm" decor some wood barrels cut in half and plant some in to contain the spread and they give nice color, height and shade to a yard. Just my 2cents worth.

Is that a run area around the coop that you plan to wire in? My chickens ate every blessed blade of grass in their run and even when I try to replant an area they de nude it in hours.

I would try to avoid nosey neighbors and add a Faux slide to the side so that they don't realize it is a coop so it looks like a play house. Or make it look like a potting area and add some pots........Artfully and clandestantly camoflage the coop and run so that from a distance no one gives it a second thought. definately get some kind of hedge going.

I would even go so far as to put up some lattice and greenery around it so the chickees can enjoy some privacy from nosey neighbors maybe some speaker rocks so you can play some music during the day and no one is the wiser in the case that your chickens cluck when laying eggs...my whole flock announces the arrival of an egg.

There are so many varieties of parrots I agree about calling them ground parrots. Or Blommehuhne

Just a little note to say chickens have been kept as pets far longer than parrots or budgies. If anything, a chicken is more customary than an exotic animal.

Well, that is really darling! Little girls would love to have that for a play house even! I would totally call the silkies "African Ground Parrots"! What a hoot!

Well, I really like the change you all did. I mean, I liked the orange better- but if you're going for conformity, it's looks fabulous! Definitely does not scream "chicken coop" in my book. I still love your structure and it's very cute, even with the new siding! Did you decide what to do about the neighbors seeing it? Still thinking the trellis build might be your best bet with shrubs on either side. It would just look like very nice landscaping is all, but it would hide the whole structure. I've seen some very tasteful trellis structures put behind water fountains, ponds, etc to offer more privacy or just a nice backdrop to their project. We built a nice heavy trellis last year- we used 2X2 lumber for the inside trellis part (treated 2X4 for the frame) and it has square holes (instead of diamond) and it looks very chic. I was in Fargo a couple months ago -- on our way up to Perham to stay on the lake, and there were a lot of nurseries along the highways. I'm sure they'll be happy to show you the vines that grow the best in your zone. Anyway- your project looks good and I hope you don't have any more complaints!

Looks good but when you put those 'African Ground Parrots' in their somebody gonna be screaming you do have a permit for exiotic pets. Some people have to have company with their misery. You've got one for a neighbor.
