The Double-Decker Brooder

You are all too kind. Since lil' JJ figured out the whole food thing, she has also figured out the poop like crazy thing. I can see I will be rinsing that shelf liner off several times a day!

Looks like a good idea...seems like it would work for ducks or chicks. Question though...I thought that ducklings had to be able to really insert their bill into their water to keep clean after eating. Am I missing something?

JJ doesn't seem to have a problem so far and I do have some water in the lid....that is where I am putting tiny pieces of greens now. Of course, JJ is playing with them more than eating them...but at least JJ is having a good time.

This is such a great idea, Wifezilla! I have just set dome duck eggs for the first time ever in my hatching career so I am going to be watching this thread for updates

You have saved me potentially a ton of headaches and mess!!!!

You're right... they do have to dip their head in water to clean their nostrils and to keep their eyes from drying.

BTW that is a brilliant setup!

So far I am hosing off the shelf liner twice a day. When I peeled it back this morning you could see how much mess would have been in the brooder had I not put a second tub with bedding underneath. I was shocked that one little duck could make that much mess....LOL

There is still no smell, so all I did was stir up the pellets. I also wiped down the walls and cleaned the mirror. JJ shakes his/her head all the time when eating, sampling apples, trying new greens and sprays stuff EVERYWHERE.

JJ is getting used to the cleaning routine and I got her/him to hop on my hand while I replaced the liner and then hop off once it was back in position. Too funny!!!!
