Oodles was the first of the girls to set, and she hatched 5. She was pretty protective, and would quack up a storm as well as charge us. The charge would stop about 2ft away, she'd quack some more, we'd pet her and the babies and that was it. Thank you for the welcome!
We have about 20 ducks, 4 geese, and 60ish chickens.

Here in CA, there are alot of redtail hawks mostly in the surrounding mountains. We live in a regular neighborhood at the edge of farmland and orchards, and my backyard area is 1/3 acre not counting my side area where we keep our rabbits,ducks,chickens & quail. We only free range our chickens right now. I'm thinking about getting rid of the rabbitry as it's just too much work for me. I've been here 25 years and have never seen a hawk around here until about a month ago; but he must have traveled on thankfully. My dogs are very tiny-2-4 lbs. I rarely let them out anymore after my male maltese got fly strike really bad on his bum last year. Flies have become really bad in this city over the past 3 years. Now it scares me to put the dogs outside, so I gave their pen to my male goose. I'm so sorry about the losses to you both of your doxies and for the ducks too.. That would devastate me to lose one especially like that. I've been wanting to move to NC where I can have acreage, but then I think about predators that we are safe from here, along with mosquitoes which are scary bc of West Nile virus, so not certain I now want to move east of the Mississippi.It's a huge and costly decision to move 3000 miles with the animals in tow too. I've done it once from New England to here but had no animals back then and not nearly as much junk as we have now either.lol Aargh! Decisions, Decisions:)

Everyplace that gets mosquitoes is subject to West Nile risk. We live in West Central Texas and there have been three cases of confirmed West Nile in Abilene about 50 miles north of us. We drench pretty much everything in lemon oil/juice as a "natural" repellant. We have some of the best smelling dogs around these parts.

If you move to the mountains of Western NC you won't have mosquitoes especially if you have ducks.

Ditto. It's so prevalent here that there are support groups for it. One of my dogs has to be treated for it every year. I hate ticks, and I've always been terrified of ticks since way before Lyme disease was ever discovered. I'm not skittish about insects other than ticks, roaches and earwigs because they crawl in your ear and eat your brain.
