First of all stop thinking duck and start thinking ducks. Ducks need the companionship of other ducks. Two will be fine but if only two make sure they are either both male or both female. The will avoid any over breeding which can be dangerous for the female. Females will lay eggs without a male around just like chickens do. If you want to attempt getting a duck to bond with you then the younger you can get them the better. Adults and juveniles will eventually accept you but will probably never really bond with you. Fresh water at all times is essential as they need it in order to wash down their food. Also, a small pool for them to bathe in now and then. It looks like you are in Nevada (?) so you will want to make sure they have shade from the sun in the warmer/hotter months. Make sure they have shelter to sleep in that is secure from any predator that might be around (neighbors cats and dogs count as predators). We our new to the group and our thinking of bringing a duck to our home. We like to learn more about them and how to raise them. We have incubators for chickens. We don't know if we will foster one bring in a juvenile or raise a baby yet.
If you do get ducks good luck and enjoy.
