The Duck Thread

Hey guys. Anybody have a clue what this pretty guy might be?

He's so cute, but a complete lunatic. He's my neighbor's and sort of a rescue. He has a freakish mating drive. Like a switch flipped overnight! The only thing he hasn't mounted is the chickens and rooster. Thank the Dear Lord his self preservation seems to have won out on that decision. He's being separated again. No one can pull the trigger because he was the court jester for a while and made us all laugh. I think they hope he'll snap out of it. Any way that might happen? Obviously, they have a female muscovy who's sitting eggs, a pair of pekins that are around 14wks and a pair of rouens that are around 12wks. He's had it out for the pekin male since it arrived, attacking it with what looks like intent to kill, not just dominate, but they've always been separated. The recent intergration didn't go well.... It was rape and pillage palooza. Not easy to watch.

The mallard looking are too big to be mallards, right? Ones sounds like a female and the other presents as male. Lol. When they were just fuzzy brown and yellow puff balls, one had a stripe and a dot by their eye and the other had 2 stripes, so we thought, 1 Rouen and 1 mallard. I have no clue. They sure look big for a mallard!
Looks like he could be a Dutch Hookbill mix.

Awwww they are soooo cute! And I can imagine them flying around the house. That would be so sweet! As far as handling, my guys are letting me stroke their necks and bills some, during Pea parties of course, but they still wont let me pick them up. I have to corner them to do that! How do you get the finches back in the cage after letting them out?
Thank you. I love them so much. Their antics and naughtiness. They love flying around. But I am constantly 409ing counter surfaces and the floor. It is worth it. I am glad your birds let you pet them during Pea parties (haha, love that term you made up) because how can you not touch them?!! When they are that cute they have to be :).

Luckily at night they do go into this new cage on their own which is a big help to me. When I had the other set up with the smaller cage, they wouldn't go in voluntarily so I had to resort to catching them in the dark which was no fun. Not for me or them. I'd see where they were sitting on top of the cage, turn off the light and kinda quickly fumble in the dark to grab one of 'em. Often times they'd know what was coming and just take off blindly so I'd have to rush and turn the light back on so he or she wouldn't get hurt flying in the dark. That would go on many times until I'd finally grab one. And then they'd get the treatment. In my hand all you would see is a head and a tail. Then I'd kiss the head of the bird several times and put the bird into the cage for the night. I know they hated it but it's not my fault they are so cute.

@Julie Bird - they're adorable!! Thanks for sharing. It is tough when you just want to scoop them up & shower them with hugs & kisses, but they won't/don't cooperate. Believe me, the majority of the time my little bundles only like me from a safe distance. I'm going to name one of my Rouens Fuzzlet!
Thank you Debs. I think they are so sweet and cute too. It is tough. You totally get it. And it is frustrating when one of your little webbed bundles or one of my winged tootsie rolls is out of reach because we as humans love touch and want to be physically demonstrative towards our sweet pets or children and whatnot.

I love that you are gonna name one of your Rouens Fuzzlet. Yay. That is gonna fit. They are such an adorable breed of duck. I have seen pictures and they are so cuddly looking.

I think if I lived in a neighborhood with y'all then I would have no problem finding a trustworthy babysitter for my ducks and Ryleigh! Yet my husband would either leave me or go completely insane. Thank you Julie bird for liking the name. I tried to make it different. Completely off the topic, does anyone know how to make a duck diaper??? I swore I would never be nutty and go that far but I think I need to let the ducks upstairs SOME TIMES without having duck pooo everywhere, I tried putting Ryleighs diaper on charlie and that didn't go so well, it just doesn't work. Oh my gosh, what have I become!?

You are so cute. And funny, too. You are welcome. It is fun to be creative and different at times.

Regarding the diaper for JoJo and/or Charlie, try to see if you can get ahold of kukupecpec. She actually makes duck diapers and sells them. But she could probably give you tips on how to make some for your webbed birdies. You're not nutty at all. Have you been over to the show off your house ducks thread? It's very entertaining but has great tips and guidance.

Can anyone offer me some advice on my broody duck hatching her own eggs? We candled them at 7 days and it was obvious they are developing well! This is my first female duck so I have never dealt with this before. My drake has been very patient and protective of her while she sits on her nest but I am assuming once the babies hatch I should keep mama and babies separate from him, right? If anyone can offer advice or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. :) I have been searching but can only find info on hatching incubated eggs. Thanks!
