The Duck Thread

I agree these guys are great! About a week after the Cayuga babies had been released into the rest of the property, the geese decided that adoptive mom wasn't attentive enough and took over! And unless their parents teach them to fly and migrate the almost never do. One of the geese here is a baby the mom hatched here, mom and dad don't fly and their little has never even attempted it.
That is great to hear! When these little geese were day-olds they spent some time with the pekin and a mallard at my place and they were in love with both as parent figures its going to be interesting to see how a month has changed the both of them!

Two questions... I have a wild mallard couple that visit daily, eating out of the duck bowls and interacting with my ducks. Today only the male is here and he is "curled" up with all the other ducks, pondside, snoozing... Normal?
Second, I'm hoping that my female duck who laid her clutch over 11-12 day time period but also sat the whole time, only leaving for 20-30 mins at a time, will get her duck butt up today( it finally stopped raining, sun is out) I'm going to candle on the spot when she does. Do I take the eggs that are closest in development to the ones in my incubator or will that keep her from sitting back down? This is her first clutch, and she's pekin x mallard (I think)

Once they are in broody mode you can take as many as you need to. and yes take the ones closet to the ones in your bator. I go in and close the door and when I bring the ones I am taking out I put them in a basket so she can't see them.
Hopefully the mallard drakes mate is sitting on a clutch of eggs somewhere. They don't stay with their mates once she's on the nest. The cads. lol

Hello everyone,
So I incubated 5 eggs and only one hatched out. I have been really upset and hope they didn't suffer.
Anyway, I have had my work cut out with one duckling, Winnie.
She is amazing but it is worse than having anew born baby. ( Ended up sleeping on a cold wooden floor last night so she could see me!!)

I absolutely adore her. She went shopping with me today in my cardigan pocket. :)

Here she is fast asleep,,,,

She is so precious. <3 I am going to get her a little friend on Friday though. As lovely as it is having her so attached to me, I know it's kinder to get her a friend.

You are so correct that she needs a buddy and I'm glad that you already have plans for another. So adorable.

Ooh she is so pretty. What kind of chicken is she? 8 love her colors. Plus 8 have a thing for feathers as I am an artist and a feather painter.(no birds are harmed in collecting feathers for my art, btw)
I have guineas if you might be interested in a few feathers. Just putting it out there.
