The Duck Thread

Got a great pic of my ducks yesterday when they let me get really close

These are beauties!! What kind is the black or the black with white? I have 1 similar but with less white, she is the loudest and seems to be the boss of all!

Black and white is a Black Swedish duck, the all black one is a Cayuga duck. They're awesome, and they have such great personalities. The loudest and bossiest by far is my Pekin duck. She's such a greedy, chubby, loud little thing, but she's loved nonetheless, and she's the friendliest.

:lau , if those big fluffy ducks leave the ground I will be very surprised!!!
I like your chilterns, I don't think I would mistake them for a pekin though, they do have their separate look, very lovely though.
LOL, well you have told all of us now, so now we have to make our mental images.lol.

I am glad that you don't think the chilterns are pekins. I was worried that I had been duped as not much info on them....

Do you know when the KCs heads will turn green if they are male? Or will the Tell-tail sign on their tail show first....

Also, do ducks partake in incest and is that detrimental to the ducklings if I want to breed... I have a favourite who I think may be male, and if he likes the female KCs then that's good (if any are female) but I think that he has to be related to the other chilterns... So breeding from them can't be good can it?

Sorry, I have no idea about drake colour, when they happen or what colour. Not sure when the tail will come through. Hopefully this weekend I am getting a KC drake, he should be just fully matured so I will tell you his colors, tail etc.

You will have to ask more duck expert people on the breeding Q's. I really have no Idea. I know in breeding chickens there is no way of keeping a quality line with out inbreeding. But have no idea with ducks.

Did you mean that you inbreed your chickens? If so that's interesting as I have 5'chickens as well, hybrids for the eggs, but am looking to get a breeding trio soon. I also have 4 turkeys arriving in July...(hopefully)!!

As for the eggs from the chilterns, the Internet seems to think that they are great layers... At nearly 9 weeks old, it would be a miracle if they laid an egg... Lol... Also, I bet they are male!!!

Was the mask feathers or flesh?

Sorry, again I don't have a full idea on what the go is with inbreeding. But that is how you make a quality line. As of yet I don't breed my own stock and I am not ready to get a quality line going. If you want you can just breed a pure bred but just keep getting new stock in. I think you have to breed a father ( rooster ) with a hen offspring and closer and it's bad. But I am not 100%.
Hope you get some eggs soon... and lots of them.

hi everyone! I need some information. I have asked people around here , at what age do ducks start laying? well u would not believe the different answers I got...so I ask u who I think knows more than anyone,,,,when or about when do female ducks usually ready to start laying.?  I had one guy asked if I had drakes............ddaaaaaaaaaaaaa.. please help. thanks:he

I have 2 Mascovy ducks that are about 7 months and just started laying yesterday and I have 2 bantam Cayugas ducks (drake and duck) they are about the same age and the hen started laying about two weeks ago.
