The Duck Thread

Agree about the fox, that was just 7 year old logic.. have a trapper working the property so far we got a possum and a skunk no fox.. but a property about 5 miles from here he trapped a coyote..

this weather is throwing off all my layers............
We're having spring like temps which is sparking interest in mating it happened earlier this year in Jan we had a warm spell mating began and some of the girls started laying which my Scovy's have never done, the weather really does affect them, my hens are beginning to pick up on laying too after about 2-3 months off for molting. Love to see those eggs.

@kpsocalchicks89

Totally normal for weather to affect laying. Out of 8 ducks, I am only getting one egg per day, maybe every other day. But come March, I will be getting 8 per day and then I will have too many to use. Ducks do lay in a rhythm with the seasons.

Hi everyone,

We are thinking about getting ducks, and I'm wondering if anyone else here has raised ducks in a similar climate to Las Vegas. We're thinking about getting one Pekin and one Mallard duck to live in our backyard. I understand that they need space and wouldn't be happy indoors all the time, but I'm wondering if it's possible to raise them outdoors in Las Vegas. It can get down to 50F during the winter and up to 105-110F during the summer.

I feel like these are very extreme conditions for ducks, and I'd like them to be comfortable. I'm unsure if it's even possible to raise them in such an environment. Has anyone kept ducks in a backyard in relatively harsh weather conditions successfully without bringing harm to them?

Hope someone can help. Thank you!

Until you get the boy-girl balance fixed up, I would give the girl her own place. She is little, and her well-being depends entirely on you.

I agree, way too many males in that bunch, eat a couple of them-or give them to someone who will eat them. then let nature takes its course in spring with a pair. she will automatically nest and try to hatch.
