The Duck Thread

MY dad wants to put down weed killer on our lawn. What type of weed killer would be be better to put down so the ducks don't get sick? the pellet kind or the spray kind. Also how long should I keep them off the grass for?

Ducks will eat weeds, but not all weeds. I had Rouens and they would eat virtually all the broadleaf weeds, the shoots at the bottom of my Russian olive trees, etc. Then I had Pekins, and they did not eat much of any weeds—I'm not really sure what they were eating outside of bugs, which they really loved. The Muscovies this year eat grass and some weeds, though it's kind of early to tell yet what they are eating.

You'd want to check the weed killer. I have used sprayed-on Roundup, which is gone in about a week. Personally, I generally just dig the weeds in the grassy areas. Also, if you're not in a huge hurry and it's warm out, spraying vinegar on weeds will kill them. It takes a week or more and may require reapplication, but I've done that too, especially where my dog and ducks go.

I uploaded a video of my 2 week old Pekin swimming. Do you see how he has his legs farther out? I also noticed today that he sits a lot lower in the water and his legs NEVER stop moving as if he isn't bouyant at all. My other ducks will move their legs and then just float.

I think he has spraddle leg so I've added Brewers Yeast to his food and changed his bedding from dog pee pads to rubber drawer lining/towels.

Have you seen ducks swimming like this? The others hold their legs closer to their body or under their body.

It is for the rest of the lawn. I have a pen for the ducks, I do let them out sometimes when I am home.
I personally would not use Round up or any kind of weed killer if your going to let the ducks out. But that's just me I am pretty fanatical about not using any kind of chemicla around my home in and out.

I agree but it is his house and yard so I think my dad will still go through with it. if he does use a liquid killer how long should I keep them of the grass?
