The Duck Thread

they are beautiful. never heard of them. had to look them up. have you tried your local craigslist? and I just read that the Cayuga's are in danger of being extinct! that is awful.

We ended up getting two Ancona ducklings ad a Muscovy. I told my husband that when we buy are next house we will be getting silver apple yards! I still hold on to the dream of owning a little land, but we are just lucky we were able to buy a home! It's in town :( but when we got married we didn't know if we would be able to buy a home anytime in the near future. We can't really have more ducks then three.

Anconas are endangered. I had never heard of them before until the woman who works at the farm store told us she breads them and they would do well in are yard. I love them so much, but when we went in there was a five day old Muscovy I felt so bad for. They just gave her to us and I LOVE her! So glad we got her. They wag there tails and it's adorable.

I truly have a problem with reference to a domestic form of the mallard being referred to as endangered....to me that reduces the importance of the word. Just because an Oganization, that few here belong to declare something "endangered", everyone not in the organization jumps on it. Their numbers only refer to their members.....great marketing tool.

we hold the same dream. we were just talking over the weekend about how we would rather a small house and lots of land, than a big house and little land. all it takes is a dollar and a dream, as my Dad always says, referring to the lottery! that's why I buy tickets when the jackpot is big! I want land!! I want a farm! haha! or at least to live in a town that doesn't tell you how to live your life. We don't have much of a chicken ordinance here right now, but it's on the agenda and no one will be grandfathered in to the new laws, whatever they may be. probably something in order for the town to have control and collect more money! haha!

Maybe you can write a note to te poultry organization stateing your feeling on why they shouldn't list domestic ducks as endangered. But any animal in the world that there is a low number of is listed that way. It's how the world is. It is a little odd te domestic animals can be listed as endangered, but that's what it is. I don't think it's a marketing tool. People want animals for te reasons they want them (eggs, pets, ect) and stores sell the easiest to get and cheapest ones that meet the need. The fact that someone wouldn't feel that animal isn't the best choice for them and thy get another that may not be as common is a good thing. It mixes up the gene pool. But you can just call them all ducks if that makes you happy :)

We live in a town, but it's considered county land... I don't really get it, but because of that there are very few rules! The whole county we live in is fairly easy going, so we are lucky for that. We also got a home loan with hardly any interest and nothing down, so we keep adding to what we ha saved and maybe in five or ten years we will have a house on some land, but I try to remember that we didn't think we could get a house for a long, long time and that so many people lost there homes and we were lucky that we could buy one. Plus I get to have ducks, my son has a home and yard, my dog and cat are happy.... I have to remember not to complain! Lol

Thank you...you prove the point....it is an organization that profits from domestic "endangered species" that declares so.etching that is not a species as an endangered species....
