The Duck Thread

They really have. Whenever I take her out for swim therapy the ducklings cry till she comes back. It's very sweet. Ebony wants to be with both her sisters and the ducklings. Can tell she is torn between flocks. It is a good thing that they will merge into 1 flock when the babies are bige enough
That's sweet do the other girls come over to visit?

Help!! One of my pekin ducklings was stepped on today. Hes a little over 2 months old. I don't know if he broke his leg or not. He tries not to put presser on it but has a few times what concerns me is his foot is turning a light shade of purple and now he has it curled up and isn't walking on it. Is it broken? If so what can I do

What stepped on the duckling? could be broken I have no way of knowing and not being a vet really can't say but I'd treat it as one, put the duckling where it isn't having to use it's leg much. The purple maybe bruising I'm sure it's painful and maybe why it's not using it. I'd put it into a nice warm bath and see how it uses the leg and foot there. Do not leave it alone in case it tries to get out and makes the leg worse. while in the tub though feel along the leg and foot gently fr any breaks then post back what you have found. Hopefully it's just bruised and very sore.

Man that looks like a big duckling how is she doing this morning? and sorry for the confusion.
Well, she finally came out of her shell overnight. But I figured out why it was so difficult for her. Her left leg is deformed. She can move it, but not all the way down. It's like it's stuck sort of sticking up/off to the side. So.... I was sort of a wreck this morning while I was at work.

I really don't know what to do now. Should I cull her? I can tell you that she does get around pretty well, and she seems otherwise very healthy. And yes, big! Bigger than Zeus was when he came out of his egg. Of course, one side of me wants to give her the best possible chance, but the other side wonders, if she does live and I don't cull her, what sort of life would she lead? Would she be forced to remain an inside duck? How will she get around? I'm also wondering if it's only temporarily stuck? If so, then culling her might mean I killed a perfectly healthy duck.

Man... I love my ducks so much, but they really are bringing a lot of heartache. ):

Last time I had a duck with a deformity in it's let I let it live and it lived a long time as a free range duck . It was born with it's leg only halfway finished so it was moveing it okay and limping . Anyway it lived for like 10 years does of old age I think . It was a Rouen and none of it's off spring had the sane deformity .

I gave you a link in your other post where you were asking about if the egg was shrink wrapped. Don't make a decision yet massage the leg and read this link I gave. sometimes when they have been in a tight position for a long time it takes a while to work out the kinks. You put alot into this baby don't give up yet.

She's adorable, I'd gently begin massage therapy with her and after she has recovered from her hatching ordeal I'd begin water therapy wit her just a little water to start but you know warm water helps to make the muscle relax and this would be a good time to start massage. Zeus looks great too.
