can someone help ive been farming ducks for a while and a week-ish ago one of my mallards was acting weird like its neck was all loose like it had a broken neck or something so i took it in the house and like 5 minutes after i brought it in its was just fine it was hissing quacking flapping its wings and everything and the same thing happened earlier today it was in the back yard just struggling to fly and waddle and its head was moving everywhere like its neck was broken so i took it in just like the other one a week earlier and after i brought it in and i went outside for 5 minutes then i came onside and checked on it and it was just standing there perfectly fine hissing quacking everything i dont know whats going on ive had ducks for years and this have never happened before is it some disease is something stinging it are they being attack by something (after i found out the second one was fine i checked it out there were no open wounds no missing feathers nothing it was fine) so is it a disease or is something hurt it? any information would be greatly appreciated!

We have the same problem with our mallard. We have put him on a course of antibiotics and see how that goes. From other duck people, I've heard it's the breed. Love Mallards too, such a shame x
 
Hello, Everyone I`m a newbie with ducks. Just this year I was blessed with my Daffy....which I hatched out in an incubator along with a bantam rooster. (was hopping for a hen but naww got a rooster) Anyways I just fell in love with her. Then I got her two new friends Miss Buttons & Miss Bows, now I`m really blessed with 3 needy ducks. I call them the( NEEDY BUNCH). they are the same age 6 1/2 mths old. was getting eggs for about a week then I started finding soft shelled eggs / funny looking eggs some looked like it had a hole in it with the yolk hanging out of one end and a white looking tail on the other. So I called a local vet that sees ducks, He said to give her 2000mg of calcium in her feed. Could not find that much at the pharmacy, so I got 600mgs tablet. I crush them up and add them to a small bowl of water toss in a 1/2 cup of dried mealworms and stir and pinch the worms to absorb the water / calcium mixture. I just keep adding mealworms till its all gone. They love their wormy cereal for breakfast. I give it to them every other day. And, so far no egg problems Yayy. They get free range of the yard, then locked up at night. Oyster shell, flock raiser / layena, / Brewerst yeast, and a small bowl of hen scratch. all gets changed daily. I think any kind of wet food is a cause for trouble. .And a clean paddle pool daily. They also get their scrambled eggs when it`s time to go to bed . But what I realy need to know is, will they make it just fine with out a drake? And when they get broody what are the signs? Will they be alright not being a momma or will that cause stress? I`m so worried not knowing what to expect, my husband calls me a worry wart, lol. He has plenty honey dos when it comes to the ducks. Bless his heart . So if anybody has any advice please fill free to let me know. Thank you :)

Well you don't need a drake they will be gone the way I know my hens have gone broody is if I don't see them come out and free range with the others they only get up for feed and water and if you notice a lack if eggs because they will take any eggs they find around them anday on them I don't own any ducks only drakes ( I have terrible luck with waterfowl ) so this is probably as much advice as I could give you and those egg problems should go away soon it only happens when they start laying

I've been away for awhile. I was the one who kept writing about drakes and their mating madness, lol. We now have just one drake and it's still madness. After getting rid of all boys but him, we have a ratio of 1:6 and the girls all still have sore heads

In the time I've been away I've had to deal with rat snakes, had to bury our KC girl (we think a snapping turtle got her), treated leg injuries via epsom salt soaks and confinements and throwing my back out emptying kiddie pools. Snakes will always be a battle where we live. We no longer plan to move the ducks to the stock tank and will be installing some super drains in the pools to solve the back problems. Leg injuries?? Gees, no matter how many ramps we put up, the ducks still prefer to climb in and out of the pools
