NOTHING DOES WELL IN CONFINEMENT !! People should not get a pet if it cannot feel & see the sun and do what it would normally do in the wild..Saying that duck don't need a huge pond, but need water constantly..

No I'm not saying complete confinement. I mean that they will have a pond and a house, but it will be a large fenced in area. Just not free range.

Hand raise them.. They love when I have the water running. I put my feet out there and tap the ground, they come running to see what is under my feet. The cats hang out with them and our chicken's. Go visit people I your area that have duck's or a rescue place. BYC has a Fourm for your state.. Check in with them to see who has some close by you.. Our community has more chicken's than duck's. We have a sign up at the end of the driveway that explains our property is a certified wildlife habitat.. It is from the National Wildlife Federation. It explains the 4 basic elements needed for wildlife to thrive. Food, water,cover & places to raise young.. If you have a bird bath that covers you for water. A wood pile & tree's covers you for a place to raise young ect.. Here is the plaque.

I think I'm gonna go with two welshes and a khaki. They must be quite breeds... Are these quite in your experiences?

I'm not sure.. I think so.. We only have this pair..

Quiet and female ducks don't belong in the same sentence, lol. If you want quiet go with Muscovy and clip their wings so they can't fly. Mine are louder than chickens but aren't as loud as a rooster.

What does confinement look like? Less than a certain square footage? Not free-range?

I have seen strong opinions on topics like cold hardiness, but no references on the thread (before I asked) as to actual temperature. So, someone might say, "my ducks don't mind 20F," when what they did was have access for the ducks to a shelter that remained no colder than 40F.

So, what does confinement look like, when we are talking about it?

Confinement is living in a coop and having a run/fenced in area instead of free range

Me either! I didn't mean to sound rude... hope it didn't come across that way. Here are two of my little splash Swedes. This one is going to be crested, his little tuft grows more each day. I absolutely love his feet, and he has 2 little black stripes on the center of his bill, like a little goatee. She's a real sweetie. First one to run to my hand for treats. Her feet are almost totally black, but she has more yellow on her body. Here's the black one. She's a little shy. She has a couple lighter spots on her feet, but body more black overall. Chest is now starting to turn from yellow to white.

You weren't rude , don't worry , I just didn't know about the splash variation in Swedishes , so with the feet and bill description I thought they sounded like Anconas. Those ducklings are so beautiful! The first ones feet remind me of spokes on a wheel

Which was your favorite breed out of all of them?!

Well, they're still only three weeks old, but I love the Cayuga. She's definitely my favorite. She's feisty and in charge and not afraid to take on the big ducks. The Welsh Harlequin is a sweetie and very even tempered, and she loves to cuddle. The Khaki is a bit more stand-offish, but she's coming around. My Blue Swedish HATES to be picked up or touched. She's a yeller, too. Non-stop peeping and talking from that one.
