The Duck Thread

Hello everyone. Hope you're keeping yourself and your ducks cool!

My husband and I have 8 ducks. Two are older and lay already. The younger group which contain 5 more gals should be laying anytime now. After the increase in egg price, he has decided that he wants more ducks with potential to lay more eggs. Our little KC has laid an egg religiously since she started about 3 months ago. The Pekin lays between 5 and 6 eggs a week. Our younger gals are 2 Runners, 1 Cayuga, 1 WH and another Pekin. I really like all my ducks but I'd have to say the Runners, the little KC and the older Pekin are my favorites.
He wants to get from 2 to 4 more ducks.

What do you think the best would be KC, Runners or a couple of each?

We do have one WH drake and once he gets mature and understands what duck copulation is all about, he will be the Drake on the Make. Should I also get another drake? This poor guy would be worn out if he had 11 gals!

Also, why the heck does he seem to feel chasing my older Pekin around is cool? I'm not sure if he is interested in having whoopee. or if he is just being a brat. He should understand that he has six other gals who would love to get some interest. His chasing (and/or bullying) has changed her from being a friendly duck who will come up to me and eat out of my hand to one who won't come close to get treats.

Have an enjoyable and safe 4th of July

How about adding a KC and a Cayuga? I always like to see at least 2 of every breed.

That's the only reasoning I have...lol.

I just read the whole thing. I really hope Trouble is doing ok! It's amazing how the little ducks always find a way to make a little place in your heart! If I'm not careful I'm gonna wind up getting more ducks cuz they are just too cute! Lol
The thing is that ducks stay cute as they grow up and get bigger. They have cute habits as well. The problem is that for each duck you have the duck "mess" grows by a factor of 10. They will rut your yard until it looks like a moon scape. But when it comes down to it, would I get more ducks, more than the 20 I already have...YES, in a heartbeat.

If eggs are your goal then you can't beat a Khaki Campbell. As for the gender distribution. Recommended is at a minimum one male for every 4-5 females. One male to 11 females might actually be o.k. as he will distribute his attention around eventually and none of the girls will get over worked and end up with bald spots.
