The Duck Thread

I read somewhere that molting is painful for fowl. Maybe & especially if this is Rocky's first molt, it's just making her terribly uncomfortable. Unfortunately, I can't offer any advise to help sooth her:(
Thanks, I've read that too in a poultry magazine. This is her first real molt since she is now a year old and now that pretty much all her feathers are out and not just white quills she has started to back off. She is loud as ever when I'm outside but it's not non stop now.

So sorry :( I lost my little duckling yesterday too. Duckie couldn't pip out because the membrane was too thick (I think the humidity must have been too high) :(

Hello! I am still new to raising ducks, and I am curious as to what breed I have. I was under the impression upon purchase that they were Khaki Campbells, but after I looked at pictures of other peoples' Khaki Campbells, I am not sure if mine really are Khaki Campbells.

Hello & welcome to BYC! I'm trying to get better at recognizing duck breeds. Maybe they're KCs crossed with Runners. That's my guess anyway. They're precious!!

Looks like mine from TC this spring. They looked alike until one just kept getting taller. I got one campbell & one like your's. They look like at least part cumberland blue runner. :)

Her name is Princess Toadstool. The chickens sometimes use her as a perch!! She's a big lazy sweetheart so she just lets them.

She'll have a grunt-off with Carlotta (our turkey) when there is an organic granny smith on the "people food" menu, but she'll snatch it quickly and Carlotta will take the little bits that fall out of her mouth
I love that name. It is great. Awe, I think that's cute that both she and Carlotta benefit from the gs apples. Nothing goes to waste.

They look like blue runners. My avatar is my blue runner Chase :)

I have another question already! I have two drakes and two hens, all the same age of about 25 weeks old, but only one of the hens is laying eggs. Is it possible that the second hen is just not mature enough to lay yet?

Can used a drake layer pellets? He's not eating any kind of feed crumbles anymore. I figured I'd try pellets and rumor layer pellets are all I can find locally./
Adults usually do better with pellets, plus you have a lot less waste than with crumbles. I would not ever recommend feeding a drake layer feed unless it's for a short time you're in a pinch for feed.

Are you perhaps on a phone that's auto-correcting you when you're trying to type Dumor? I've never heard of a duck feed named Rumor, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
