The Duck Thread

Anyone know about the brooder plate? Do you put it under the box?
Thanks!

In the box with them... has adjustable legs to move it higher as they grow...

Thanks everyone. We buried Waffles under a tree today, which was no easy task with the ground frozen solid and snow covered. I'll miss her lots, but I think Potato will miss her more. He has 12 other ducks to socialize with, but he never cared much for them. He just loved his Waffles. I hope he can become ther close with another duck someday.

I'll try my very hardest it get more females. The truth is it's very hard to get some. We are building a pen for out pot bellied pig in spring at can't get any more animals untill after May. Pot bellied pigs are a lot t handle and I'm not sure we can have ducklings in the house with our 6 cats already tempted by the many birds we have. I may be able to adopt a few older ones from lolypop farm but that's about my only option

You've all made me feel like a horrible person for keeping so many drakes with my females. I'm trying the best I can, I have a lot of other animals to take care of but ducks are my favorite and I always try to do what's best
I had the same issue. I had 7 hens and 5 drakes. I found 2 drakes a home with some lonely hens (unfortunately the new owner's dog killed them both so theirhens are lonely again). Then I added a friend's Pekin hen that needed a place to overwinter (her entire flock was killed by coons leaving her the sole survivor). So now I have 8 hens and 3 drakes although I am wondering if perhaps one of my drakes is in fact a hen as I'm only seeing 2 drakes with sex feathers. I may still have 1 drake too many or maybe not? I haven't had time to catch ducks to double check and not all drakes display their curly feather (they can lose them). I do miss the two drakes quite a bit but the hens are better off with less drakes. I am debating on building a second duck pen so I can separate out extra drakes next winter instead of selling them-- I use my ducks to train stockdogs and hens can't be worked heavily when in lay so right now I can't train as much as I'd like.

I'm so sorry! Waffles is a great name though. Potato is like my Sam, she had a friend named Bob Johnson Chevrolet (don't ask) but when he died she never really "clicked" with any other duck for along time. She has finally made a friend in Freddie, one of my rouens

(Sam is not a male she is a mix)

She sure looks like a boy. She must cause the others boys such confusion lol. Very pretty though, glad she found a friend.

Potato has been doing alright. I'm glad to see he's not distancing himself from the others. He seems to taken a liking to the Pteroduckyl, my chocolate runner girl. I know he's mated her before, but he was always rather snappish towards her. Hopefully he can start being a gentleman to her like he was with Waffles.

Duckasaurus tried a little courting behavior on him

But he was clearly not interested. I hope she doesn't take the rejection personally, lol.
