The Duck Thread

Another question: Do Cayuga ducks fly? Will I need to clip their wings?

I just ordered 5 ducklings to be picked up in early March, 2 are Cayuga. So was wondering.

Thanks!
Mandy

Mine don't. Big bodied bird! Of course they try... Generally it ends up looking like a bunch of tippy toed fat ballerinas in duck costumes!!!

Mine will try to fly now and then. Usually it is for only a few feet and is really a pretty pathetic attempt. However, I have had one or two actually make it over their fence a couple of times if the wind is right.

I LOVE ducks, they're what got me started on chickens. Some pics:
What kind of ducks are those in the first two pictures? Theyre so pretty!

Been mia cause I got depressed after those predator incidents.

We pulled the entire floor off the coop and found 12 rats living in there GRRRRRRRR!!! No wonder Odin wouldn't stop barking and all my babies were taken!!!

We dug 3ft down around the entire coop and placed mesh wire set on cement. And put meshwire under the new floor boards in the coop + built a new run (although we still let then out to forage every day. Odin does a good job at keeping diurnal predators at bay)

So! Onto my question!

Is it true that if my female muscovies have babies from either my crested white or my Campbell the results would be quack????

If so that's sooo cool!!

Would they be silent like muscovies or quackers like the others?

Well to answer your Muscovy question, I have a Muscovy (named Turkey) and she has mates with a mallard, a KC, and a Swedish before, and they've all been quackers. I guess Turkey gets tired of the same old boys

We feed ours less today. Because they didn't eat it all. But they still will not eat the pellets. We tried oatmeal barley grits you buy at grocery store they didn't care for it . Or the meal worms. We keep trying.

Curious question: does anyone else's flock divide into sub groups by themselves? My younger ducks all seem to have formed their own group and hang out together. The two mallard girls and the four mutts have no problem mingling with the other seven older ducks (although they're not that much older, only about 6-7 months older), but they always seem to separate again and pal around. They are also my rebels. When I herd the ducks in their pen, the older ones have no problem filing in, but the rebels want to stay outside and put up a fight. They are all mallard or half mallard, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Just an interesting observation :)
