The Duck Thread

Regarding the above post, it's much easier to just add Brewer's yeast to your feed than try to force niacin down your duck's throat multiple times a day. You should just add brewer's yeast from the beginning and then you won't have a problem. @Amiga has lots of good info on niacin deficiency and how to treat it. Swimming is not necessary to correct it.
Hi Pyxis and thanks. I changed the way I give the niacin. I now have a pill cutter I got at the drug store, since the amount I need to give is 100mg and the pills are 500mg, I cut them into quarters. I then take 1 quarter, put it in a thick freezer sandwhich bag, and crush it into a powder. I then sprinkle the powder onto treats such as fruit, etc. the extra 25mg won't hurt her, and most of that is lost in the bag anyway. Thanks for the link to Amiga. I'm always down for learning more and more about all animals. Brewers Yeast. Hmm, I wonder if Miss Wiggles would like Vegemite? Hee Hee :)

Hi, welcome! You will find LOTS of information here, if you don't see it, just ask. We have a great group of people who are very knowledgeable! I have learned loads, I am still a newbie, I have only had ducks for a year and a half! It seems that something is ALWAYS going wrong or I have a question.

Again....welcome!

Mandy

By the way, as for treats, mine LOVE peas (will do anything for peas), dried mealworms, koi food (not too crazy about this), watermelon and cantaloupe. I am sure there are others, but these are the only ones I have tried.

Enjoy!

Most of the time, in juvies, bill color has no connection to gender... it's only when they mature that in some breeds the drakes bill turns green... *I think* it's only with certain top quality lines of Welsh Harlequins that they can be sexed by bill color... I'm not totally sure on Anconas, but I don't think bill color is reliable with them either...

ETA: I have 2 Rouen (mixes) and one has light bill, other has dark... both are female...

Oh I really hope your right!! We already have to many roosters..

I think with Pekins it doesn't mean anything. I have 3 hens all have different color beaks. One is yellow, one is peach color and one is a darker yellow. And I know they are hens, they're laying eggs. I agree, give them more time. My little girls didn't start to quack until they were over 2 months old.

I hope the quacking starts soon lol :p
