Hi! The purpose of this thread is share a bit about my upcoming order, and the 5 chicks I will eventually choose for my backyard flock! If anyone is interested to see how the order and choices turn out, and then watch how the littles grow, I would love to have you follow along!
The background story:
My aunt and I placed our chick order today! She lives on our family’s farm a few miles down the road, and my DS, DH and I share the responsibilities of taking care of the chickens as she works on adding egg sales alongside our flowers and produce stand. I fell in love with working with the chickens, and after DSs continued asking about getting some for our house, decided to add a small flock of 5 to our backyard this summer!
Just like last year, I’m in charge of raising the babies until 4-6 weeks, but this year I will be choosing 5 friendly (female) birds to stay here on my smaller, in-town property before moving the rest to the farm. I am hoping their lovely personalities start showing up before that!
Here is the big reveal for breeds we are getting! We ordered from a local hatchery and from Murray McMurray. My aunt may want to add a few birds from Ideal also…we will see! So I will have a tough decision to make when late summer rolls around! I am hoping for friendly birds, who will be ok in a large run when we are working or not home, and a rainbow colored basket! Our hatch date is the week of June 20th, just in time for me to be off for the summer!

Any guesses on the 5 breeds I will end up choosing? Any guesses as to breed/sex we will get as our Mystery Chick? It would be fun to see if anyone guesses correctly!
I’ll be posting updates to the orders/shipping, and pics of the chickies as they grow up! Hope I have some company as I document the first year with my own flock!
