I have a mixed group of brown-egg layers. I just realized that my dark brown eggs are beige. Is this an over-the-winter thing or is something missing from their diet? They get oyster shell, layer pellets and all the weeds I can pull and an occasionally a melon or vegetable leftovers.

I have noticed my brown egg layers have laid lighter eggs over time, I thought it was just me. My theory was just like humans loose pigment in our hair as we get older, chickens might too, but it just manifests itself through egg color. That's just my theory.

I have a Buff Orpington that lays an almost creamy white egg now. It started out as a brown cream. They just loose color as the laying cycle lengthens.

But they're only a year oldin February! Is there anything I could feed them (coffee grounds, dark chocolate, black granite) that would enhance the color? This just seemed to happen in the last month. There was a lot of rain and their pen was flooded so I've been letting them free range. They killed the lawn and ate all my baby tears--just a coinsidence? They also dug up my tulip bulbs and pecked them and pooped all over the place.

Mine got lighter after the first year got and now on year 2 they are almost white
I wouldn't worry about it. I never thought of coffee grinds, it might work, let me know what chickens act like on caffeine high!!!
LOL
