The Fathers Day Hatch-A-Long!!! The Last Day To Set eggs Is June 3rd!!!!

I lost track of this thread...lol

Here is what has hatched since the 1st:
2 Silkies
1 Mottled Houdan (was mis-marked & accidently mixed in my Silkie order)
2 Ameraucanas
6 Lemon Cuckoo Orpingtons

Here is what is in lockdown to hatch in the next 2 days:
1 Mixed Bantam from my Girls (under a Broody)
7 BYM with both LF & Bantam (under 2 Broodies)
6 Lavender Orpingtons
5 Call Ducks

Here is what goes in lockdown next week:
2 Saxony Ducks
1 Runner Duck
1 Black East Indie Duck
3 Silkies from my new Girls (testing fertility)

Here is what is shipping this week to go in the bator:
3+ dozen Silkies
6 Assorted Marans
9 Assorted Cochins
4+ Blue/Splash Orpingtons
3 Jersey Giants
3 Pekin Ducks
3 Ameraucanas
3 Blue Wyandottes
3 Giant Blue Cochins

Shipment pending:

6 Bourbon/Chocolate Split Turkeys (pending e-bay auction)

Ok...now I gotta get those other 6 cages here ASAP...LOL

We are about 5200 feet above sea level.  Have you had good luck hatching shipped eggs at your altitude?

This is only my fourth incubation attempt, and tried shipped eggs only once with Ameraucana eggs shipped from SC that took longer than they should have in shipping. I had no hope but two did hatch. First attempt was total bust, I think got too hot. Second was very successful - local breeder suggested 45RH for incubation and 65 for lockdown. Third time I tried drier, not so successful, seemed too dry, odd problems I didn't have the second time, and large air sacs. I'm gonna try the 45/65 again and see if it works again. Not doing shipped eggs again until I feel I've figured it out - too expensive. Do u have some local eggs to 'practice' with?

Quote: I practiced on my own eggs first, just for that reason. It eliminates two issues: expense of shipped eggs and the effect of shipping on the eggs. Looks like you are on the trail of success . . .

As far as time shipped, if eggs are handled carefully by the USPS shipping time is increased dramatically. I sent eggs to the midwest and 5 days later they arrived, non-machined, as requested.Less damage to the eggs. While the USPS can reroute packages to kingdom come and back, sometimes there is another reason.

Your list look as bad as mine. My hatching starts Sunday nd hopefully will continue for 5 weeks. I have another brooder to set up in my brooder room. I found an old cow water tank in one of our old barns it won't hold water but it will hold chickens. ;) I figure it will hod a lot of chickens. :D

Well I ran my first hatch on 45/65% and I had 100% hatch rate, but they were local eggs. After seeing the very large detached air sacs I bumped the humidity up to 65%, I think I will leave it there and then possible bump it up to 70% for lock down and see what that produces. The huge change in elevation and oxygen availability has me a bit concerned, I hope I get at least a 40% hatch out of each incubator.

I think I will candle them again tonight to see if there is a change in the air sac size since I upped the humidity. I don't think it will have shrunk, but I would love to see no change. If it stays that way I think it might be ok.
