I know you are probably all sick of reading about Bye, my rooster chick that got the Bye, because he was so nice. He is ugly as sin, but truthfully has all the characteristics of a great rooster. He may have ruined any future roosters for me.

And yesterday, again he steps forward. Buttercup, the laying hen was giving some grief to a point of lay pullet. Bye steps in, and gives a little cluck that I swear sounded like, "Now, Buttercup, you need to be nice to them, they are not hurting anything."

The POL are not laying yet, but starting to redden up, and I noticed they are sleeping next to the big guy now, much to Buttercups disgust, but she is not saying anything. Things are peaceful in the coop.

Checklist for a good rooster:

  • The hens like him
  • Grandchildren test
  • new chicks test
  • day time predation test
  • Warning tests
  • eye on his girls test
  • people test
  • peace in the flock test
  • tid-bitting
  • wing-dancing
Yeah, if he just had pretty colors to his feathers, he'd be perfect.

Mrs K
