The Fricken Chicken story!

Yay! More chickens! :love I can't wait to see what they look like!
Like I need more chickens 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️! This whole situation with miss broody... is causing my hubby a lot of work. Now since it's a pain, that my silkies are laying in the back of the dog box. (God forbid I leave an egg in the nest over night) I have convinced my husband to build them their own silkie coop, with easy access to nesting area. So.... I think.... I'm going to start a project with those pallets, I have not burned. I rather use up-cycled stuff I have laying around, add a little money for a decent roof. Than spend 300+ on a crappy made tiny box, better suited for a pair of parakeets.... ugh..damn cute fluffy chickens.. they just couldn't hold off on baby making till spring.. I will however keep my mini run set up. It is perfect for babies, or a bad rooster box, just not laying chickens.

I have that problem to. I had a spugeti scoop duck taped to a stick, to get eggs in the very back of the dog house. Some times I forgot and ended up with 20-30 babies!

On the silkies are you wonting to bees all the silkies together, or are you wonting to breed for pure color and pure breds?

On a very very sad note... I lost my blue polish to a hawk couple days ago. It's been a hard year on my flock. The hawks have proved to be a real daily problem here. I've done everything I can to deter them away. Which there is only so much you can do when you free range.....
Do you have a bird net over the run? Sorry about your polish :hugs

A bold eagle tried to eat one of my little bantams.

I only have my paint rooster, white, paint, blue, black, and blue partridge hens and pullets. The paint hen, the blue partridge, and my black hen have been laying, maybe the white girl too. The other are to young or mid molting. So they will be silkies, no idea the colors. Now Lilly my duccle/ cochin bantam, did hop their fence a week or so ago. So I wouldn't be surprised if she contributed to the eggs too. So if I get a random bird, that would be a Lilly/Falkor cross. So cochin, MF, EE cross! Lol Now I'm kind of hoping she did contribute 🥰

I free range their group daily. So I can't do netting. This little prick, and a huge one have taken a liking to my yard. Lots of squirrels, rabbits, birds, chickens.... it's a buffet for hawks and predators....

I wonder if there's a way to make Hawks go away? Do your chickens not run and hide when they see or hear a hawk?

They do, but he is stealthy and blends in to the trees very well. My big rooster takes ques from the blue Jay's. They usually make a huge fuss over hawks. Crows too. I busted that hawk in the act with my chicken though. I happen to walk out to it munching away....

I've tried owl statues moved daily. My tree creatures gets moved around too. Pie pans. Hose to the tree when he lands there, while I'm watering chickens. Screaming at it. Leaving dogs out. Attracting the crows (best help)... I've tried it all, that I can do. I only have a few options. It's not like my chickens dont have coverage in any given area. Free range all comes down to who is the fast at that point. Now my little protege Fritz is shaping into a good little rooster! I watched him ninja kick a blue jay off the silkie run, the ran it down a few trees. Poor Fritz is still in love with his hatch mates. He was starting to hang with the polish, until they was wipe out by the hawk.

Is it alegal to shoot Hawks? You can kill snakes is they're threading you our live stock, can you do the same with them?
