This is a link to an article that shows how onions are beneficial to
Chickens !
In brief: adding 30 gr/kg feed results after 42 days of use (in broilers) an higher weight(= more efficiency in feed consumption) much higher population of Lactobacillus ( very beneficial probiotic bacterium) and very low of E.coli load(= potentially harmful bacterium )

no surprise. virtually all omnivores benefit from fermentable fiber, obviously through their happier, stronger gut bacteria. You can reasonably expect most other good fermentable fiber sources to be beneficial as well (sprouts/fodder of course, but also chicory, apples, some of the root vegetables, and well sprouted and cooked beans).

I agree, but onions a other plants from the Liliaceae family as an extra bonus!
They have the good fibers that use as growth medium for lactobacilli and other probiotic Bacteria but the are also very reach in Allicin and other Sulfur compounds
That are very powerful antibiotics that target especially E.coli.

We use onions to help keep parasites out of the sheep; a neighbor swears by it for helping de-worm, a he uses TONS of them, just dumps entire truckloads in the paddock every year at harvest!.... I was always confused by the general "no onion" statements as far as onions go; I have always fed them with no problems... Garlic is used almost daily; the benefits of ga luc are well known; I had wondered about onion.. Thank you for sharing :)
