I am so sorry for your loss. I, too, am a new chicken owner. I received 10 hens from a friend who was moving. Within a week I lost 4--one was so badly hurt I had to put it down. Two dogs (caught in the act) had killed them. I agree with one of the other posts, dogs do it for the fun of it. I didn't kill the dogs. My rage and screaming scared them away.

Since then we have put boards around the bottom of the chicken wire fence along with electricity. That (so far) has taken care of the dogs, now it is the owls and hawks that seem to be picking on me.
