hubby would prefer not ot get another hen? but that leaves the cockerel alone. i had heard that this will make the bird stressed and he may die?

Personally, I think you need at least 2 or 3 to replace the one you lost. Chicken math.....

I started with a roo (given from a friend) his temperment got ALOT better when we introduced 3 hens (gonna still get 2 more ) dont see why you cant but i see it as there are no benefits from a single roo. Even a hen will still give eggs

Hi ... We had a single Black Australorp rooster/hen pair, Chiquita and Picarro, famous for their beauty, devotion and wisdom. They hatched out of a small clutch of eggs incubated in my son's 3rd grade class.
Alas, after a few years Chiquita died in an accident. Picarro was despondent and horrified by the new hen we purchased to keep him company. He wouldn't eat or have anything to do with the store bought hen. I kept him alive for a while feeding him table scraps by hand but he eventually died of a broken heart. I will never forget them and they have a special place in our family's memory.
