The horrible feeling of accidental deaths. :(

Trishkabob, I am sorry to hear about your losses as well. Losing birds is always so hard... It is a good sign that you loved them so deeply. It means you are a compassionate person. I am certain you gave them a good life and will give any future birds you have a good life as well.

Unfortunately, my cockerel seems to be gone for good. I miss him deeply, but there's nothing I can do but mourn and gradually move on...

i know exactly how you feel, except mine were me being very very dumb. i put 3 month old pullets in with my full grown flock. only to find the next morning the one broke its own neck trying to get out, one was crushed by her fellow sisters, one had its wing eaten ( but recovered) and and 2 had there butts picked out horendously. and with the 6 that were left, including the one with the eaten off wing, i let them free range for a day and they loved it so i let them free range all day now. I really with i could have done that earlier. i say know that i like ducks more than chickens cause the dont eat eachother. im very sorry for your loses

I totally agree tammyd57, experiencing emotions is natural. Holding things in leads to dis-ease. What I try to do (and not just with my animal situations but all situations) is to allow myself to fully feel whatever emotion I am having(not taking it out automatically on those around me). Then after I fulling experience the emotion I am better able to deal with what comes next like forgiving myself/others and learning from the situation, moving on. I think it is stronger to not be afraid to express your feelings then to deny them and hide them.

SilverPhoenix I hope things smooth out for you and your chickies

I think it is good that you are reaching out to talk about this

I have found Backyard Chickens to be full of wonderfully knowledgeable and caring individuals

Best of luck to you!

I'm so glad to hear other mushy hearts talk about their chickens this way! We haven't had any deaths yet... and I know that it is a matter of time.

And not to name them because it makes it rougher... but they are my pets, how am I not supposed to name them... I name EVERYTHING, even the one eyed opossum that comes around. But it will get better... because we learn. Somethings are completely outside of our control or just part of nature... and the other stuff that we beat ourselves up about, just have to not do that again, ya know?

But we are only humans and they are only chickens (as much as we love them and feel for them).

Next year will be better, has to be, doesn't it?
