The attic access point at my old house was a door-sized hole my Tata cut into the garage wall, and then a ladder leaned against some bracket shelves made out of wood that you had to stand on to get in the attic.

There was a hole in The Parents' closet, but Mom did not like using it. When we were moving, one of the movers stepped on the panel for the closet hole and made a nice big hole through it. We had to replace the thing he broke and we also had to board off the garage attic entrance since the house could not be sold if it remained (fire safety or something).
