My first experience with raising chickens was back when I was 6 yrs old outside of Cleveland,Ohio...
...my parents decided to raise 100 or so meat birds - - one of my 4 brothers and I were in Nebraska
at the time visiting the grand-parents. When we got home my mother thought they needed to buy another
35 for Ric and I to enjoy as small chicks....
Cut to the scene of a little girl picking out HER chicken from on the other side of a small foot high fence...
she slowly steps over to pick up said chick and...........yep! You guessed it!! - stepped right on it and smooshed
it good - - sound effects - - - CRYING and HYSTERICAL SOBBING - - of course my mother was having none
of it and promptly says "There are 34 more!! PICK OUT another one!!!" I was traumatized!!!!
Fast forward 40 plus years and I decided to have a go at raising layers - -
My brother and I built a coop over the Christmas holidays and yesterday I went and picked up chicks!!!
They have been here a short 24 hrs and have managed to steal my heart - which is only fitting as
they are my favorite Valentine's pressie of ALL! And that includes any diamonds I have rec'd in the past -
not that I don't like fussy jewelry but diamonds have never been my 'best friends'!!!
From hatchery stock of 5 day old pullets I picked out :
2 - Welsummers - 'Elke' and 'Lotte' (Dutch sisters ya know
)
2 - Silver- laced Wyandottes - 'Scramble' and 'Frittata'
1 - Gold -laced Wyandotte - 'Spice'
1 - Black Astralorp - 'Jemima'
Purchased as 2 day olds from an incubated hatch of a local gal - - straight run -
2 Blue Laced Red Wyandottes - 'Quiche' and 'Meringue'
1 Splash Blue laced Red Wyandotte - - 'Custard' - - - this one I think is going to turn out a roo....
just by the way he holds his head up high @ 3 days old - I don't know -
.....which might not be a bad thing if he looks anything like his poppa!!!
I am excited and thankful to have the ways and means to embark
on this incredible journey ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
you all have helped me along the way more than you know -
Now for the pics - - - "On with the SHOW"!!!!!!
