The last picture of my pullet turned cockerel before he is re-homed

I'm sorry you have to rehome him! He is a good looking roo. I'm in the same situation right now. I'm going to make an effort to keep my boy i think though. I've had one roo that I had to rehome before, but my current cockerel is amazing! I can't even think of getting rid of him!

@SwedishDude99 my neighbors aren't keen about my chickens in the first place. I can't take the chance of losing them all over a rooster, but OMG is he nice and beautiful. I will miss him. *super sad face* Although I started looking for an acreage property today. I do NOT want to go through this again!

At least you can re home him
I'm worried I won't find homes for mine
That won't just want to eat them

@Pinkaboo I was very afraid of that, but count my blessings that one of my daughter's friends has other barred rocks and was willing to take him. (I threw in a bag of food as an incentive! hahaha)

I'm glad to hear your looking for some acreage! I wish I lived on acreage. One day though... I live in a small neighborhood, and my neighbors are split 50/50 on who likes and dislikes my chickens. They aren't terribly loud, but some of the people just don't like the idea of having them around. It's sad that people want to complain when they can't even hear, smell, or see your birds. Anyway, I'm planning on setting up a crate in my garage and putting my roo in there every night so that in the morning he won't see light and therefor won't crow. (That's the idea anyway ;) ). So are you planning on more birds if you get acreage?

@SwedishDude99 I would have a kazillion if I could. I love my birds! Never had them until about a year and a half ago, but they bring me so much joy! My neighbors have called the city because of a "smell" just to be vindictive. There is no smell. They are kept clean and free range. There is nothing about my chickens, other than the proud clucking of a girl who just laid an egg, that would be even slightly offensive. I'd love to have land that I could do what I want and nobody would complain about my pets who are less noisy than any dog in my neighborhood. People just don't get it. And can't seem to mind their own business.

Do you think your roo will crow when he DOES see light?

I could t agree more. Some people just don't understand why we would want to raise livestock when you could just go pick stuff up at the store. And for some reason they decide to get mad about it and complain about things that are simply a common misconception. They have no reason to do it, because like you said, if taken care of, chickens are not loud, and they don't smell. I would have more chickens than I could count if I had land where I wouldn't be bothered by people who choose not to try to understand. Then again, I have neighbors who are amazing people too! And I have no doubt my roo will crow when he sees light. At about 9:00 every morning I will put him back in with his hens. I figure as long as people aren't sleeping it's ok. And if there isn't another roo around to challenge him, he will probably only crow a couple times a day. It does depend on personality though. He could possible crow all day long. If he does crow constantly, I will have to rehome him. :(

Well good luck with your rooster and neighbors. FYI, roosters will crow light or no light. I've heard mine crow at 3 in the morning. Maybe keeping him in the garage will lessen the noise for the neighbors. Amazing that people will complain about a rooster, but likely say nothing about the dogs barking at night. :/

Good luck to you! I will keep you (and your flock) in my thoughts and prayers. I hope it works out well. It is hard to lose a "family member!"
