I had to put my beloved silkie rooster, Herb, to sleep at the vet a couple days ago. He was my first chicken and I hatched him from an egg, and I always wanted to breed him because he had really good type but I think because of incubation mistakes I made when I hatched him and multiple power outages he ended up being a little off in the head. Only one other egg hatched with him and turned out to be a hen, but in three years she never layed a single egg and he never mounted her. After she died I got him a new silkie hen to keep him company, one that thankfully layed eggs. But I never saw him mount her and they seemed to just be companions, and I was fine with him just being a pet because he had such a funky personality. I tried a couple times to hatch eggs from her just in case but all infertile. After I had to put him down I decided randomly to throw the ten silkie eggs I had in the incubator, just in case. He was sick for almost two weeks before he was put down and definitely didn't breed her during that time so even lower chance that any of them were fertilized. That was maybe three days ago, and I just candled and what do you know... one of them has veining. There might be another but too soon to tell. I'm trying not to get too excited because it could easily quit or not hatch, but what are the chances! I would be beyond happy if one hatched and continued Herb's legacy.
This is kind of random but there's no one for me to tell right now and I'm just so excited at the possibility of hatching a little chick from him! And the hen that layed the egg is quite nice as well so if I get a chick I think it would be a pretty good looking silkie.
