The Life of a Battery Hen - READ THIS.

Me too! I want to build a Battery Hen and Rooster rescue! And make it to were people who love chickens and chicks can adopt them! But I don’t know if I’m going to do that. I just feel so bad for them! It makes me also want to take even better care of my birds!

That's what I'm doing in a few years.

Clucky I didn't read the article but I've read many in the past. I don't need another thing to be irritated about. However, I think it's a bad practice to have people going hungry while good food is destroyed for no reason. These companies all want tax breaks, the shelters and food banks always have their hands out, so why can't those cockerels be fed to weight and donated if consumers don't want to eat them?

I don't know. I would never do that to chickens...... ask them. :(

Yes, unfortunately that's what they do :(

Wow. That’s... depressing. I’m happy I get my eggs from my own flock. So, they just- throw away live chicks? That’s the cruelest thing I’ve ever heard.

Actually, they put them in a grinder........while they are still alive! 😢 And they load the males in big black trash bags during sex sorting and they do that until the bag is full......the ones at the bottom are suffocated/crushed......

I cried. I have lived in the one-person-can’t-make-a-difference mindset. But this...words fail. I want to change something. Anything. I don’t want to forget. I want to help others remember. Because we must know, somewhere, in our subconscious. I am, unfortunately, under 18, so it will be harder. But I’ll change the way I see the egg cartons in the store. I’ll change the way I see my own birds. I can make small changes, and work up from there.

This is not always true. I asked My Pet Chicken what they do with their males and they said the Amish take them to raise them up.

Used to be hatcheries sold male chicks in cheap fryer groups. Now no one wants them anymore, and no one want to raise their own meat. You cannot get hens without all the roosters.

Cackle still has the classic Fry Pan Special, but even that is Sold Out! Sold Out means there is a demand for the cockerels, with the understanding they will be meat birds.

This year has been different with people looking into being more self sufficient. I hope it's a trend that continues. There aren't unfortunately enough good homes for every rooster, and meat has to come from somewhere for those that eat it.
