She wrote that sometimes she leaves to a local pond. There could very well be a handsome drake down there she is visiting.

Out of curiosity, if she did visit with a Drake, wouldn’t the drake come visit her egg laying spot or at least visit her? I thought they stayed together one they mated?

Not always. The boys often have harems.
I'd check the eggs for fertility.
