The Last and Final Chapter of the Lonely Hen

1 month later.

It was nearly October. Leaves were falling in a colorful mess all over. It started to get colder. My babies were never taken away from me... I guess the girl thought that I could raise them on my own. I'm glad she thought that. Lilly was so beautiful, as was Rose. Both of them had tints of black, orange, and white. They still havent fully-feathered out yet though.
It was a bright and early morning when I woke up. I slept in the hen house with my Little Miracles. Everyone awoke at the same time. The gate wasn't opened yet, but I knew it was going to be opened soon.
I got down with all the rest and ate and drank. Today, I thought, is going to be a normal day... let's hope. All the other days were normal even with Emma. Right now Emma has to leave soon. She can't stay long on this earth anymore.
Finally the gate got opened and all of us came pouring out. Pepper, Lilly, Rose, and me all went to the garden fence to talk.
"So my guess is that... Ethel-" I stopped... I was about to get teary-eyed,"-is... gone."
Pepper spoke up, "Hannah...." she started to say, "sickness can go on for a while sometimes... especially with us. Who knows, maybe today is the day she gets out!"
"You said that yesterday though."
Then all the sudden I heard a flapping noise and kinda a crash. We all rushed over to the sound to investigate. I looked with bewilrdment. My eyes were popping open. I saw a speck of tannish feathers fly off something. I raced over there which was by the human's house. I looked on there little porch and Ethel was there... she was standing on the little porch with sickening eyes.
I could barely speak... "Ethel..." I managed to say. "You're... alive!"
She looked at me with saddened eyes. She was pale, but looked kinda healthy.
"What happened?" I asked her.
"I was sick..." It was weird hearing her speak, I havent seen her in 2 months! "I had scaly leg mites, respitory problems, and a different disease. The girl was always crying... I don't know why because I wasn't her favorite, but I heard her say that she cared about every one of us. She helped me get better. All I need now is water, food, and sun-light." She finally finished.
My heart was pounding. Everyone finally caught up to me and gasped. Ethel didn't make a sound... she didn't even rush to hug me. Maybe she was too weak.
Then the girl popped out of the door and picked Ethel up and brought her down to the coop. All of us followed, waiting for Ethel's story.
When we were all down there and the girl was gone, Ethel said every bit of her story. She said how the humans do care and that they are really sweet creatures. My eyes were sparkling with tears and so was everyone elses eyes. Even Emma joined. Ethel did question about "the deer" but later on Emma explained everything.
Everyone went off except me, Lilly, Rose, Pepper, and Emma. We were still in the coop.
"So your really Emma?" Ethe said to Emma with surprise.
Emma nodded, "Indeed I am. But I'm afraid I have to leave soon today because I have to go back up with God and Jesus."
Ethel started to cry even more and hugged Emma for a long time... it felt like hours before they were done.
"Oh goodness," Ethel said, "you guys need hugs too!" She skipped over to us and gave us squeezes. Even my Little Miracles got hugs.
"You must be my little nieces!" Ehtel said with a grin. They nodded their heads with a smile.
"We never got to meet you Ethel! Me and Rose missed you like crazy!" Lilly exclaimed.
Ethe smiled once more and gave them hugs again. I'm so glad I didn't lose another friend!

It rolled around to dark and it was time for Emma to leave. We were still outside, but the 5 of us went into a big clearing by the coop to say our good-byes.
"Oh Emma..." I started, "I will NEVER forget you!" I hugged her super tightly.
Emma got teary-eyed. "Hannah, you are my best friend, I love you so much and you will never be forgotten either!" She hugged me back by putting her head down by me.
Everyone else said good-byes and Emma headed off to the forest where she will once again meet God in heaven. Everyone was crying with hiccups when we all went back to the coop. Everyone was already inside when we hopped on a branch in the coop.
I couldn't get sleep so I decided to think....
I'm having a great life right now. Life is great! I have my best friends and daughters! Plus I know Emma will always be by me, looking after me. I closed my eyes smiling with my last thought.... It isn't the end... it's only the beginging.

You're welcome!
