The Migratory/Ornamental Waterfowl INFO Thread

oH DEAR GOD!
I just went over there myself to look, they charge $70- a pr just for mallards!! double to triple the common prices for all the others, whew, yall stay away from that place, please....

Well, things arent lookin good.
My dad really only wants to build 1 aiviary, and not a super huge one. So unless I can do some major talking, or I can get enough money ,I doubt I will be getting oranmental ducks. The possible thing is he will pay for the feed if I pay for the birds, and most the aiviary.

Don't give up on trying to convince him. My dad was the same way at first but if your persistent and show him pictures of the birds, how much the aviary is gonna cost, and how much you can make on the birds to make back what you payed and add up what feed might cost and look info up to show that your prepared to raise and sell them you might be able to get to him. I also did a lot internet surfing and found decent prices on my birds and showed my dad the money saved. You also might try and look for bird farmers in your area that raise pheasants and other game birds that have aviary netting and/or wire that you can get for a discounted price. I saved a good amount of money by getting a free top net from a friend and a couple of rolls of pvc coated wire from another.

yep,
That's very true Toejam,
it usually takes some convincing on dads, they all feel you are just throwing money away, but if done right, in a year of breeding, you can payback most of the expense. Then the following years, you easily cover the feed bill and usually have a little left over for EXPANSION!!!
That's how most do it, let the birds pay for their hobby.
I hope all works out there, good luck to you.

roocrazy, I got it, just sent one back to you.

yep, that's the crazy part of it all, how they all sell out. I looked threw that one this morning before I went to work. always heard people speak of it, but never been there til then. I bout died.... Obviously, they just drop ship other breeders birds, but my Lord what some prices. I think their $400- $500 black swans were almost $1100
all the others were ungodly too, easily $100 per pair over priced on the cheap stuff like woodies and pintails. God help you if you wanted a high dollar pair, they were all double to triple.... Now I refer all yall back to what I meant about the .com'ers they are a prime example. I know they as a company have to make money too, but if you're going to sell birds, raise your own and sell them at fair prices. Shoot in some cases, they have to be making more than the suppliers they are buying from, LOL

edited to add

I meant to say I noticed a 'MIX BREED" one in their pics too, LOL

That's not even close to a rosey bill pochard they have pictured. I used to have a ton of them, they bred like rabbits. A rosey bill has just that a rosey bill, not a freakin wood ducks bill,

They also dont have green heads and chestnut breast, they are all greys and blacks other than a purplish head in the sun and a white tail spot
Yes, I had one of them pop up here to, that is 100% a wood duck rosey bill pochard cross breed, you'd think pros would have caught that

I hope so.
They are great for young folks to get started in. Helps teach responsibility, gives them something to be dedicated to, keeps ya out of trouble, (LOL) and in time, you can make a little spare money to pay for it all and support the hobby. There's many pro's to it, and very few cons. The initial start up is the only one I can think of actually.
Get out and so some side jobs if possible on the week ends, mow grass, clean yards, help out anywhere you can so you can pay for most all of it yourself. That usually gets them, when you show you are willing to commit yourself to doing it on your own. That's what I had to do. I didnt get any help in it, not even a single nail was put in my any one but myself. and every penny that went into it, had to come from my own pocket. That was their only conditions to it. Which after the first year or two, that was no longer a worry. Took me about 5 years and I already had a couple hundred birds and my first 150 x 50 pen going, from there it was on...

Keep at him, let him know you were serious about it. I will be glad to help you out all I can , how ever I can. Wish you were closer, I'd even help out on the pens. I just hate to see some one who wants to do this, not be able too, cause of the little stuff.
Keep us posted on how it comes.

Ithink the biggest reason is since my parents are divorced and I live withmy mom, he would do them(feed and water) a few days a week.
