The Migratory/Ornamental Waterfowl INFO Thread

One has a pink band and the other has a black band but i have no idea if one is a hen or not. both of there bills are pretty red.
the only difference between the two is that the red area on the one in fronts doesn't go quit all the way to the top of the bill and the other one does.

p.s. how long do you usually keep yours in quarantine? I would like to do the normal two-weeks but the cage really isn't all that big.

if they are the same age, hen in front, drake in back.
Baham pintails both have the red/pink triangle on their bills. The males is always darker and bigger. In normals, the hen is usually pinkish too, not as bright red, but compare the size of the triangle on these, small one hen, big one drake.
Of course, vent sexing is a plus too.
I keep mine seperate for a month unless and sickness shows, then a month from the day the showed no signs.
That's the "proper" way to do it, the same way the USDA does it in importation birds. Of course, I dont blame you for wanting to get them out of a small cage, but always best to be safe.
By the way, they look great, and healthy too!

Thank you. The one with the smaller triangle just kind of "acts like a hen" too if that makes sense. I was going to vent sex today but wanted them to calm down a bit before they had a heart attack and gave my dad a reason to complain about how much i spend on them. I do want to put them in with my others but where they were being held was right next to every other bird species on this planet. they were surrounded by chickens, pigeons, and quail on both sides and none looked sick or anything but i think i will leave them in there for a few days then put them into my old aviary once i get my new one completed sometime this week.

Haha, before i told him how much i payed for them i told him there usual price range to ease the shock.

It took some major convincing just to get him to let me go to the auction today.

I know the feeling, back when I was a kid, my dad use to roll his eyes when I'd get new ones to start, or say "YOU PAID WHAT FOR THOSE THINGS!"
After a couple years, he just stopped, well when he saw folks from all over the country stopping by to buy some, or calling to order them... Then of corse, the Bronx Zoo folks stopped by , that shut him him for good,

Those Silver Bahams are a beautiful duck! Always liked them...even the regular Bah pintails have a unique look to them. I have some pics uploading as we speak of the new additions to the aviary. Will be sure to post them here!

Question about Apricot Wood Ducks:
I got a pair last year and they were gorgeous. This year however, the female is still an Apricot color and the male.. Well I can’t tell him apart from my other two Wood Duck Drakes. Will his color change to the Apricot?
You can tell a big difference between the Apricot hen and regular hens but I spent an hour or longer yesterday trying to figure out who was who on the drakes.

Thanks

How long ago did you sell stuff to the bronx zoo? I was just there last year. I wonder if some of the birds I saw were yours?
