That's all I know of too. Home owners in most cases covers exsisting structures on the property, (duck pens) BUT NEVER HEARD OF BIRD INSURANCE

Question about Barrows Goldeye...

How do they do in Trios?
I have 1 pair and have the opportunity to buy another hen (2009 hatched).

Also has anyone witha Large Pond been sucessful at keeping their ponds "clean"/clear.. we are have about 50,000 gallons we are trying to get clean without having to drain the whole thing

all goldeneye always seem to have 4 females to 1 male in the hatch, as a result they do come in large groups of hens to single drakes pretty often.
I kept mine in trios with good success, much over 2 hens starts to hurt fertility a bit though.
As for the pond, god luck, mine were huge, still had to drain them and bleach them out at least once a month, took a couple days to fill them all back up, but that was the only way to keep them clean and clear. A little bleach in the water helps cut back on frequencey of draining though

Aubrey, Did you ever have cubans and if so what kind of box or nest did they prefer? Also I havent posted pics of my baikals yet cause they are first year birds and the boy is just starting to color up. But I dont love em any less.

Did my annual duck count (90) but swear Im staying under 100

I did have a few pair of cubans, mine were pretty aggressive. As for nesting though, they always just found a thick corner in the pen somewhere and did a basic ground nest. Even with ground boxes out there, they never used them, same with all my treeducks. They'd get behind old logs, or thick grass and scrath out a hole fill it with grass and nest that way

Duck Boxes..

So we are going to make all of our duck boxes on are own.. Yeah that will be a task.. almost 100 of them!

So We are getting Rough cut cypress in a few weeks to make them because we have heard that this is the best, but in the meantime we are getting down to freezing tonight.. has anyone every used Cherry wood? Will it hurt the ducks and how durable is it?

ver tried that.
I always just used plywood for mine. Cypress would look great though!

Not sure about the freezing referrance, they only use them for egg laying if that's what you are thinking there, males only perch on them, hens only go in to lay.

A reply from the Georgia DNR waterfowl biologist about the possible band in Georgia on keeping them. It took all this time and a number of e-mails and forwarded e-mails, but they finally got me in touch with the man that actually oversees everything waterfowl related in Georgia

here's what he said ...



Mr. Webb,

Thank you for your questions and concerns regarding permits to hold migratory waterfowl in Georgia.
As I understand the laws, the State of Georgia does not issue a permit for migratory waterfowl. Because migratory waterfowl are not addressed specifically in Georgia's permit laws, we defer to the federal permit process administered by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Persons having the proper federal permits are allowed to hold/breed/sell migratory waterfowl in Georgia in accordance with their federal permits.

Good to hear!! Thats usally what happens they go federal for laws when not clear on state. less gov the better

Now when you get ready to get back into them me and kanga can get you addicted like us If the breedin seasons half as good as this year Ill have plenty
