The Migratory/Ornamental Waterfowl INFO Thread

First... Is there a difference between Mazuri Waterfowl feed and WAterfowl starter or are they one in the same?
Second.. How soon should I put the smew in a wet brooder where they would have a 2x3 tub to swim in all day? it is getting between 95-100 and a heat index of 105 here during the day??

Ok so what am I??

Do what type of pochards do you have, and could the top one be hawaiian?

Red Crested Pochards is the only pochards I have. I was think it was that or a Canvasback because when we put it in the water it dove and dove and dove.. and you could see it swimming.
I don't think it is a hawaiian. She is being really weird. She will lay sit for a week or two and then abondon the nest. she has done it twice and is on her third nest and we will be pulling these from her!

top question bird is 100% red crested pochard
beautiful eytons and smew too.
as for wet brooding, as long as they have a way to easily get out of the water, you can wet brood at day 1 if you want, no waiting period. Just watch them the first little bit. be sure they can get out on their own with little effort, and dont get water logged and they will be fine.

Sweet i'm a good guesser-

Question: My Bahama pintails have been chasing and bullying my silver's and it looks like the silver male's wing is hurt. I have seen him strecth/flap both of them but then when he goes to lay them black down he twitches the one wing and lets it set weird where its not all the way against his body, i'll get a picture or video later if i can. What do you think, sprain or broken?

Mazuri waterfowl starter is little bb like food where the maintance is more of a larger frisbee disk shape. It is my main food for my ducks. In winter I mix some purina flock raiser and white proso millet and put a couple of vowls of that in there along with the Mazuri. I also give a scoop of floating Catfish pellets in a bowl of water 2 x's a week. Don't throw it in the pond or you'll end up with stinking nasty water. You would probably need to do this more since you have the Hoodies and other divers

We feed our adults 2 scoops of Southern States Waterfowl floater every day and they love it but wanted some a little better for the Smew babies. I have been looking around and no one here has it in stock and said it will be next week. Luckily I can get some from another breeder here.

I have to order mine when I need it. I try to stay 1 bag ahead since sometimes it doesn't come it for a couple of weeks. gets really aggravating when I have been ordering it for 5 yrs now. They should keep a couple of bags in stock for me

Went and checked on my silver pintail drake after i got off of work, was still hiding under the spruce tree, couldn't find the female went to looking and found her in the bucket ground box right infront of the spruce tree, hope she is on eggs, although its a possibility she got in there to avoid being bullied. Checked the log i rolled in there and found 5 normal bahama pintail eggs today. Not sure if the ringed teal hen is actually incubating her eggs(5) or not, seems like i can go out there and always be out of the box then at other times i can see her fly out before i get to the pen??? Found 2 more button quail eggs, and have 92 pheasant eggs a friend of mine gave me for working at his bird farm, picking up 300+ eggs (payed good though) Got a lot going on here at the moment and seems like not enough time to do it all.

I am so depressed. My dad found 3 of my 5 baby smews dead this morning in the brood box. They have been eating like crazy and drinking so we have no idea what happened! So depressing. I hope we don't lose the other 2. between the 5 smews and 6 eyton they were eting 200 meal worms a day 100 in the morning and 100 in the eveing plus gamebird starter. We twitched them to the Mazuri yesterday and this happen!

I also found 2 Marble teal on nest yesterday. One in a ground box and 1 in a raised wood duck box!
