The Moonshiner's Leghorns

My Game Hens seem to do well with the other birds.
Same. Of the three (maybe four because I have one I think has gone completely feral) I have they are all lovely. Not ones to be cuddled but then I don’t handle any of them so that makes sense. One took over as head hen right away but other than one scuffle she hasn’t had issues.

Yeah.

My Game Hens seem to do well with the other birds. The Blue Face becomes quite the savage when broody though. People are currently gearing towards hens with extra gameness which kinda defeats the purpose of having them around for free range, which is common practice with hens.
These are pretty old bloodlines, nothing new. Some of the hens are just as game and aggressive toward other hens as the roosters are against other roosters. When we try to turn them out they will ball up and fight to the point of exhaustion and death if we don’t intervene. They will also fight through the wire of a hen in a pen, causing both to beat their feet and prop toes up. They will near kill each other if we try to pen two of them together if we don’t intervene. It is inconvenient. They are Radio Kelsos and Albany Kelsos mainly. Two very old bloodlines. We can turn our Deadend Grey hens out to free range no problem.

The key is, the one hen became dominant and the others submitted. These don’t back down and they keep fighting like the roosters do. 😵‍💫

I think some of it has to do with the breeders lines.

I would love to turn out some of these hateful old heifers to free range so I can use the pens they are in. Most of them aren’t being used as breeders, but my husband won’t part with them. So they are stuck taking up pen space until they die of old age I guess.

I grabbed pics of a couple up and coming yard roosters. These will be left to free range with the hens. For now, the main rooster King is still in charge but he is getting old.

Anyway this is a Brown Leghorn (not Don Schrider’s line). These are the Brown Leghorns from a different source I got. This rooster is on the smaller side and his tail doesn’t spread like Don’s line so I don’t think I will use him. He has a gorgeous comb though.

And here is the other incomplete Black Tailed Red. He doesn’t have as much red on his breast as his brother does. But he looks lovely in the yard with the hens. He is a big bird.

Not the greatest pic of the BTR, he is still skittish.

It would be nice wouldn't it.

I'm looking for more sources for Blue Face.
